Microsoft introduced Windows Phone 7 series at just concluded MIX 2010 conference and also released the development to aid application development for WP7 (Windows Phone 7). Considering that most of Electronic Medical Record Systems are built on Microsoft Technologies and run on Windows, it will be interesting to see how these applications transform to Windows Phone 7 Series. Of more interest is that, with emergence of Windows Phone 7, transformation of desktop applications to mobile networks has become easier than ever.
Its true that iPhone could be one potential platform to make the EMR portable to handsets but it lacked support from developer community. There are hardly any EMRs for Mac while there’s a whole lot of medical software solutions for Windows. All these solutions could not be ported to iPhone, but can definitely be ported on a familiar Windows Phone 7 Series handset. It’s too early to say though as Windows Phone 7 series devices won’t arrive till later this year.
Another key point that could trigger EMR software development for Windows Phone 7 series is the fact that new OS could easily be integrated with SharePoint Server. Moreover, developers can easily build mobile EMR with familiar environment of Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 as Windows Phone 7 development kit will be part of Visual Studio 2010. So developing for Windows Phone 7 platform won’t be as much of mess as it would be in case of iPhone OS. So, we are likely to see better adoption for Windows Phone 7 in health care arena which could bring great results. Doctors would be able to stay tuned with their Windows Phone once they shut their computers down. This will improve efficiency and transparency that the healthcare world much needs.
We’re yet to see what the features like multitasking in mobile phones will mean to mobile medical world but because its coming from Microsoft, the company that has seen huge acceptance in medical software world (as platform), this new entrant is bound to excite every EMR vendor and developer.
