Most health care providers are increasingly using EHR software in their practices for streamlining complex processes and improving quality of patient care. Usability features of electronic health records play important role in simplifying the maintenance of health records. So, proper care should be taken to select the right EHR as first step to measure and evaluate the performance of EHR software. While evaluating the EHR systems, it is important to take a measured approach. Many EHR vendors would be talking about the quality of their respective EHR systems, but it is for you to determine which EHR system is best for your practice.

The steps that can be taken in order to evaluate the performance of EHR systems include the following:
Involve your Staff in EHR Evaluation Process
Try to involve the senior members from your practice and assess their expectations from electronic health records and compare this with their analysis. To achieve this, you should regularly meet with EHR vendors as well as the staff to discuss the needs and how the EHR solutions can help in meeting those needs. You need to make sure that all questions and concerns are adequately addressed. After your discussions, always list the problems that you would like to solve with your EHR systems.
Assess the Offerings from EHR Vendors
Always concentrate on those EHR vendors who are well-established medical software development and offer after sales services like EMR training and support. Try to evaluate the vendors in terms of how well they are prepared to face the future standards. Also check for CCHIT certification which is important to demonstrate the functionality of EHR systems.
Evaluate the Functioning of EHR Program
Personal demonstrations play a very important role in determining whether the EHR system being chosen will be able to meet the needs of your practice. Always test run the systems in different scenarios in order to completely test the product’s suitability with your practice. You should also create a checklist of all the important features and requirements and verify that whether the EHR systems are capable of meeting those requirements or not.
Discuss the EHR Implementation Process with EHR Vendor
Evaluate how far the EHR vendor is expected to go in terms of providing customization to offer an EHR system so as to meet the needs of your medical practice most closely.
Prepare a Timetable of Activities
Evaluate that how long a system will take to become fully operational. It may be easier to set up integrated systems than the disrupted systems which may lead to some kind of disruption in your practice.
