You should thoroughly evaluate before selecting and implementing EMR it in your medical practice. The various evaluation aspects that need to be considered include:
Evaluate the EMR Vendor
Your EMR software vendor should be evaluated for stability, reliability, size and resources, years in business, number of past installations, number of employees devoted to software development, etc. It is also important to find out whether your EMR provider is complying with the latest EMR standards, e-prescribing mandates, Physician Quality reporting Initiative, etc. The vendor should also be able to offer complete deployment and in-depth knowledge training package along with the software system. Additionally, you should be able to rely on the vendor for ongoing technical support, troubleshooting and a variety of technical problems you may face during the use of electronic medical records.
Evaluating the Software Functionality and Flexibility
You should evaluate the software for its functionality and flexibility. EMR system should have flexible configuration manual that will allow you to customize your workflows. It is extremely important as the selected software should be able to reflect your clinical needs, personal preferences and business requirements. You should also evaluate the speed of the software in terms of getting data in and out of the system. Try to find out that whether or not the EMR software has up to date interface and performance features to match your practice needs.
Evaluating the Certification of the EMR Software
You should also evaluate that whether the EMR software is approved and certified by most major insurance companies and clearing houses or not. You should also be able to submit EDI claims in HIPPA compliant formats.
Evaluating Capabilities of EMR Software
You should evaluate the different capabilities of the EMR software such as those related to improving your E&M coding accuracy and instantly suggesting a billing level that is compliant with Medicare’s E&M coding. The capability of the software to analyze patient exam data and selecting accurate diagnosis and procedure codes should also be evaluated. The selected system should also have a good report generator.
Evaluating the Software Capabilities through Third Parties
You should validate the testimonials or case studies that may be available endorsing the capabilities of the selected software. You can also interview the doctors who have already used the software. They will be able to give you a detailed analysis of all the positive and negative aspects of the EMR system and thus you will be able to ensure that you make the right investment.
