How to Ensure Successful EHR Implementation

It is important to take care of some steps in order to ensure successful implementation of EHR. To achieve successful EHR implementation in your practice, you should ensure the following:
Have an Appropriate EHR Team in Place
You should carefully select all the members of your EHR team and then identify EHR champions in the team. You need to make sure that the senior executives of your organization fully support the implementation of EHR. It is also important to appoint a skilled and experienced project manager. You need to work in coherence with the sound management principles. Always have clear and measurable goals identified before the implementation of EHR. Make sure that all the users have shared goals and establish realistic expectations. In order to get a full perspective, it is always better to create a multi-disciplinary team.
Work on Strategizing for the Process of Implementation
Plan the steps that you will have to take in order to implement EHR. It is most important to redesign your workflow and ensure standardization in simplification in most of your processes. Do not think of implementing EHR and bringing in automation just because you have the capabilities to do so. It is always important to design a carefully scanned strategy. You need to take steps towards consistently entering data into your new EHR charts. You should take up a phased implementation. It is extremely important to train your team adequately before the implementation of EHR so that they are well equipped with all the skills. You should be flexible with respect to your documentation strategy. Plan the implementation on a day when you have lesser workload in your practice. You should always be prepared with the amount of time and effort that will be required from your side in order to become an expert of EHR. Always choose a vendor who has an excellent reputation and can extend adequate support.
Plan Adequate Technology Support
If you are in a small practice, then it is important to consider an application service provider (ASP) model. However, it is important to ensure that adequate testing of the same is ensured by your IT personnel. You should take expert IT advice with respect to servers and networks that will be employed while implementing EHR. It is important to maintain your servers and interfaces on a daily basis. Create a back up for your database on a daily basis. You should also be completely prepared with a disaster recovery plan and test the same appropriately. You should never call EHR implementation process as an IT project. It should be rather called as a quality improvement project in order to ensure increased commitment levels from all your team members.
