After successful EMR implementation at your facility, the next important step is to ensure the execution of EMR training program in order to maximize the efficiency of your employees.
The team working on the EMR software will generally be a mix of staff from different departments such as IT, clinical, clerical, admin, etc. You need to train the different members of the team based on their different roles and responsibilities. For example, the IT staff and the work group of the physician may have to be trained with respect to the existing clinical templates in the EMR system. You should also be able to train them with respect to any modifications that may be required in order to comply with the current workflow of your medical practice.
You must carefully understand the step-wise approach that needs to be followed in order to effectively implement the EMR training program. To start with, you should aim at identifying the current skill level of your employees. Computer related skills of the staff should be groomed and updated as some of the team members may possess a limited knowledge related to the computers. You should now concentrate on increasing the speed and hence the efficiency of your staff. This is especially important when you are planning to set up an EMR system with a graphic interface. Ideally, the staff using EMR software should be well aware of all features of EMR and should be able to use the software to its full potential. Thus, your team members should be comfortable in checking in the patients as well in generating claims as these are the two most common practices in your medical practice and therefore the speed at which things are done becomes extremely important.
It is also important for you to design the new software training plan. You should start with developing an EMR committee which will look after the implementation and training needs of your organization and will monitor the whole process. This EMR committee identified by you should try to determine the the tasks associated with implementation and training that should be understood by everyone in the team. You should ensure that the specific team members should be able to achieve such skill level to get things done in EMR as easily as they used to do with manual system over a period of time depending upon the job descriptions and the departments in which they are supposed to work.
You should ensure that team members must get abreast with the basics related to use of EMR software and then the different members must be allocated specific training tasks in order for them to handle specific jobs. You should also make sure that a specific EMR and EPM module should be in place which can be easily referred by everyone and the manual should also be updated continuously.
